What Is a Health and Safety Policy?

A Health and Safety Policy is a plan that shows how a company will keep people safe and healthy at work.

It explains what the company will do, who is responsible, and how things will be done.

A good Health and Safety Policy includes three main parts:

1. Statement of Intent
   This is a promise from the company to keep people safe and follow the law.
2. Roles and Responsibilities
   This section says who is in charge of what — for example, managers, team leaders, or safety officers.
3. Arrangements
   This part explains how the company will manage safety every day — like risk assessments, training, and emergency plans.

If a company has 5 or more employees, the law (Health and Safety at Work Act 1974) says it must write down its Health and Safety Policy.
